How the UN System Can Advance Tangible Results on Women’s Participation in Peacemaking, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding by 2030

This (2024) UN DPPA, DPO and UN Women Options Paper provides UN senior leadership, including (D)SRSGs, and RCs/HCs, options and illustrative examples on how the UN system can advance tangible results in women’s participation in peacemaking, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding by 2030, as part of achieving the Secretary-General's (2020) Women Peace and Security goals for the decade (see: S/2020/946, para 113). Key recommendations from the paper include: (i) the UN to advocate for a minimum of one third of women in peace processes, (or no more than two thirds of the same sex) aiming for 50/50 in other political and electoral processes; (ii) for the UN to support these goals with concrete measures (iii) for the UN to utilize its convening power to mobilize support in this regard. Key recommendations were taken up in the Secretary-General's 2023 report on Women Peace and Security (S/2023/725, para 104).
